In the name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful
After a long hiatus we are back. As you may or may not know, This past year has been a bit heavy with my own studies, homeschooling, as well as work, so we decided to give our online activities a rest for a while in order to free up some time. We continued to homeschool the children and are very happy with the way things are going. As each year goes by homeschooling becomes easier as we become more confident in our approach as well as familiar with the resources that we will be using.
The past couple of months have seen the following accomplishments from the boys.
Abdurahman (who is now almost six)
Math: He has been working on solidifying his addition and subtraction facts up to ten, while moving along through Singapore math. He has about one fourth left of Level 1B.
Reading: We struggle here a little bit where we hoped he was a fully independent reader, but we quickly realized his new found freedom came with some rebellion, so we’re off and on keeping an eye over his shoulder to make sure he’s reading attentively, along with quizzing him after each session. Since our last post he has finished reading “My Side of the Mountain”, “Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh”, and “The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg”.
Writing : We started a new writing program which incorporates grammar and comprehension. The workbooks are free and are available for grades 1 through 6. We will post more about this program along with downloads for it in the near future insha’Alllah. We have also started teaching him cursive writing.
Spelling: He completed the first grade spelling words list from k12.
Science: We were able to finish all the first level books from real science 4 kids, biology, chemistry, physics and astronomy. He loved every minute of it.
Quran: He is now memorizing for the most part on his own through listening and reciting. We’re really happy with our Quran program because he has been retaining while moving along with memorization
Arabic: We took a break from The Stories of the Prophets after finishing the story of Musa peace be upon him. We picked up a set of really good early reading books and went through the first 3 levels. We are currently taking a small break to work on his Arabic writing for which he has almost completed the first level writing book from Imam Muhammad ibn Saud University Arabic Program.
Islam: Up until now our Islamic studies have been quite passive. Recently we started using a book “Questions for children that are needed by adults” by Shaykh SalimTaweel. We put them into flash cards to make them more child friendly. We’re using these questions as a primer to an entry level fiqh book as well as an Aqeedah book. Insha’Allah we will post both the book as well as the flash cards in due time.
French: We believe that Abdurahman’s English and Arabic are strong enough where they will not be effected by the introduction of another language. We chose French mainly due to available resources. He started with a free audio program called Coffee Break French, along with some online programs. We hope to strengthen this experience with some classes online via Skype with a tutor.
Math:He is working through the kindergarten earlybird mathematics books from Singapore math. We are also working on counting up to 100.
Reading:Alhamdulillah he finished “100 easy lessons” and has read 29 books to date. These books range from level one to five. He has learnt to recognize all the dolche sight words up to Grade 2.
Writing: We’ve been working on his handwriting and he is now writing small sentences.
Arabic:We bagan AlQaedat al Baghdadiyah, and we hope to finish insha’Allah this summer.
