Often while I study with Nuh, I try to give Abdurahman a task to do to help him towards the goal of independent study. So a few days ago, I gave him a chemistry book and told him to read ahead for our next lesson. It just so happened Abi had remembered an idea that he had come across and thought this would be a good opportunity to implement it. He gave Abdurahman a box of Legos and told him to try to re-make some of the molecules he was familiar with using Legos. It was actually a very good exercise that kept him busy, as he worked very well and above all enjoyed doing it.
Yesterday we were covering how atoms switch when molecules react. The Legos proved to be a great visual aid allowing him to see just how the atoms moved and re-arranged to give new molecules. I am so glad we came across this idea just as we were starting out in chemistry, as it has proven to be very helpful and effective. Next time you have a chemistry lesson give it a try.
