Catching a ball seems like a pretty simple thing but actually requires a little bit of skill. I played sports all of my life and I learned a lot of lessons from it. As kids will be kids, playing with a ball be it a soccer ball, basketball, football, or any other ball for that matter is inevitable. Most of these sports are not only good for them to get out and burn off some energy, but they are great social activities where they can make friends and possibly even give dawa.
As any person can tell you, reflecting back on their childhood years, no one wanted to be picked last. Having the ability to play a given sport with some degree of skill is important. You want to be able to focus on having fun as opposed to fundamentals like how to catch, pass, or throw a ball.
Recently I started working with my son on catching and passing a ball. We started using a kid’s soccer ball. l would toss it to my son while slowly getting further away. I have watched him make a lot of progress, but sometimes he closes his eyes and tries to catch the ball with his body and not his hands. This is where I come in to help coach him through the process, showing him how to use his hands, and that he needs to keep his eyes on the ball. As his hand and eye coordination develop, his movements will become more fluid and come a lot more naturally. This will allow me to show him how to be more creative with the way in which he catches or passes the ball. Recently I bought him a mini basketball with a hoop for his room. It is a lot of fun to play with him. We both enjoy it and it is great to watch him progress. The best is watching the excitement on his face when he makes a shot.
Sometimes we place a lot of emphasis on the academic side of education and forget that education comes in many different forms. Encouraging our children to be physically active is not only great for their health, but it is fun. It is also a means to social interaction which all children are in need of. Be it through one of the more popular sports or other outdoor activities it is important that we not only encourage our children to be physically active, but that we help them attain the skills that allow them to do well and focus on having fun.
